![]() ![]() ![]() Our hero is Simon Snow, a wizard schoolboy who also has the distinction of being his world’s Chosen One. Rainbow Rowell is writing fanfic of a series that doesn’t exist, which means that literally anything goes! There are doubly no rules, and it was a joy to read. ![]() You ever read something and think, wow, this must have been so much fun to write? That’s the impression I got from reading Carry On. ![]() To quote Big Mouth: “It is both very complicated and very simple.” Carry On is the full version of the fanfic that the character from Fangirl wrote. Some context: in Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl (which I haven’t read) the main character writes fanfic for a Harry Potter-esque series about a wizard boy named Simon Snow and his roommate Baz, who is a vampire. But on the other hand, I am the perfect audience for this book, because it’s fanfic of a series that doesn’t exist, so I can’t nitpick the characterizations or feel weirdly possessive of the characters. So in that sense, I’m definitely not the target audience for Carry On, since I’ve never belonged to any fanfic community and don’t connect with that aspect of the book. I’ll look up endless meta and analysis about my favorite media, but the idea of reading someone else’s take on my favorite characters and settings has never really appealed to me. ![]()
